Research Visits

Above are a selection of photographs from the Network Team's research visits to Amsterdam in November 2012 and Chennai, India in 2013.

In Amsterdam the Team held their first meeting and visited relevant libraries and galleries. In Chennai the team visited the Theosophical Society Headquarters, an important and crucial site visit for our research. We surveyed the grounds and were successful in accessing the Library, Publishing House and seldom opened Museum. Whilst there we met with the Interim President of the TS and he granted us access to the private rooms of Anne Besant and Krishnamurthi which are not currently open to visitors. All of this enabled the partners to better understand the experience of nineteenth and twentieth century visitors to the TS complex. The group also visited the Krishnamurthi Foundation Library and its book shop, the Kalakshetra Foundation Dance Academy, the Kalashetra Arts Centre, the Hindu Vaishnavite temple Parthasarathy and Fort St George. We were fortunate to see one evening a performance of "Rukmini Kalyanam" staged by the Kalakshetra Foundation Dance Academy which together with our visit to the Academy itself gave considerable insight into this disciple influenced by Theosophy. We also held crucial network meetings to discuss our progress to-date and enable face-to-face consultation between the Network partners on future aspects of the project at the halfway point of the grant. The local knowledge of Network Team Partner Gauri Viswanathan enabled this trip to be a great success.
