Rogier used speckled overpaint to transition visually between the halos, the gold leaf beyond the halos, and the surrounding painted clouds; the photograph here slightly exaggerates the visual distinctions. The relative brightness of the gold and paint depends on the immediate lighting conditions: compare the gate of heaven here with its appearance in Figure 14.
