Mordant gilding has been used for Christ’s halo rays (superimposed over the painted aureole), the Virgin’s shorter halo rays, and the hem decoration of the Virgin and St John the Evangelist. Mary Magdalene’s brocaded sleeves and the other metallic detail is painted. The frame is original but has been re-gilded.
