Model of the Whale Ship Swan - Unknown Artist

KINCM:2005.2196 M/G/Whaling Gallery

The Swan of Hull was whaling in the city as late as 1839 after originally joining the fleet in 1824. During this period, it was sailed continuously under the command of Captain Robert Dring. The Swan features in a number of whaling paintings by the Hull artist John Ward, including The Swan and Isabella, shown at the Royal Academy in 1840, and almost certainly seen there by Turner, who was on the hanging committee that year. Models of ships, along with plans and elevations, were frequently employed by marine painters, including Turner, to ensure accuracy for patrons with a keen eye for correct detail.
